- Grimaldi Orders Six Next-Gen RoPax Ships for Mediterranean Routes.
- Deltamarin Secures Design Deal for Green RoPax Fleet.
- Six Methanol-Powered RoPax Vessels to Join Grimaldi and Minoan Lines.
Deltamarin reports that it has signed a comprehensive design and engineering deal with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) for six cutting-edge RoPax vessels commissioned by the Grimaldi Group. This contract encompasses both the basic and detailed design work for the new Next Generation Med class vessels, which are set to navigate some of the most important routes in the Mediterranean.
Deployment Across Grimaldi and Minoan Lines
The six vessels will be divided between Grimaldi Group’s two key brands. Four of the ships will fly the Italian flag and be operated by Grimaldi Lines, while the other two will be registered in Greece and managed by Minoan Lines, a subsidiary of the Grimaldi Group. These vessels are poised to transform maritime transport in the Mediterranean, boasting a blend of substantial cargo and passenger capacity, enhanced environmental performance, and upgraded onboard amenities.
Designed for Capacity and Comfort
Each vessel will stretch 229 meters in length and is designed to accommodate 3,300 lane meters of rolling freight. Additionally, there will be room for over 300 passenger vehicles and facilities for up to 2,500 passengers. With more than 300 cabins available, these ships will provide berths for over 1,200 guests, ensuring that travellers enjoy both capacity and comfort during their journeys.
Setting New Standards in Green Shipping
These vessels will be the first in the Mediterranean specifically engineered to operate on methanol, a cleaner alternative fuel. Their environmental performance will be further enhanced by features like shore power readiness, silicon-based hull coatings, optimised hull and propeller designs, and advanced onboard power management systems. Together, these innovations will lead to a reduction of over 50 per cent in CO₂ emissions per cargo unit compared to existing vessels on similar routes.
Design and Delivery Timeline
Deltamarin is set to kick off the design work right away. We’re looking at a delivery window for the vessels between 2028 and 2030, which is a major step forward for eco-friendly and efficient maritime transport in the Mediterranean.
