The Port of Los Angeles and Belmont Shore in Long Beach have been confirmed as the official sailing venues for the 2028 Olympic Games, marking a historic return of the sport to these iconic Southern California locations.
The decision, announced by the LA28 Organizing Committee, highlights the region’s ideal conditions for sailing and spectator engagement.
Sailing Events Split Across Two Coastal Venues
The LA28 Games will feature sailing events at two distinct venues:
-
Port of Los Angeles: Hosting six boat events — Men’s and Women’s Dinghy, Skiff, Mixed Dinghy, and Mixed Multihull.
-
Belmont Shore (Long Beach): Hosting four board events — Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing and Kiteboarding.
The competitions will be staged consecutively to maximize viewership and media coverage, with boards at Belmont Shore preceding boat events at the Port of Los Angeles. The two venues lie approximately 10 miles apart.
A Legacy of Olympic Sailing Returns
This announcement continues a rich Olympic sailing legacy for both locations:
-
The Port of LA hosted events during the 1932 Games.
-
Long Beach was the sailing venue during the 1984 Olympics.
Reynold Hoover, CEO of LA28, noted that the selection followed extensive coordination with local authorities and World Sailing, ensuring optimal conditions for athletes and spectators alike.
Civic Leaders Celebrate Global Spotlight
-
Mayor Karen Bass expressed pride in LA’s sailing heritage, calling San Pedro’s inclusion an opportunity to shine globally.
-
Councilmember Tim McOsker emphasized the significance of LA Harbor’s selection and thanked community advocates who supported the effort.
-
Port Executive Director Gene Seroka committed to strong collaboration with LA28 in welcoming the world’s best sailors to “America’s Port.”
