GTT and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding have initiated a joint innovation project aimed at enhancing the design and performance of LNG bunkering vessels. This collaboration focuses on boosting operational efficiency and cutting operating costs through technological upgrades and design optimizations.
Enhanced Tank Design for Greater Efficiency
The core improvement involves raising the design pressure of LNG tanks from the industry standard 0.7 barg to 1 barg using GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane containment system. Class Societies have already approved this increase, providing a firm foundation for its deployment.
Key Advantages for Operators
-
Greater operational flexibility: Ability to load LNG at higher temperatures and deliver it faster.
-
Improved energy efficiency: Less electrical consumption during standby due to reduced reliance on subcoolers.
-
Regulatory readiness: Longer LNG holding time supports AFNIR cold-ironing recommendations, aligning with anticipated future regulations.
Exploring Further Innovation
Beyond the current upgrade to 1 barg, the partners will also explore the feasibility of raising design pressure to 2 barg, opening the door to next-generation vessel performance.
This collaboration between GTT and Hudong-Zhonghua underscores their shared commitment to innovation and sustainability in maritime shipping. By anticipating regulatory needs and optimizing vessel design, the project marks a strong step forward in supporting the maritime industry’s energy transition.
