The Freeport of Monrovia has commenced 24-hour marine operations for the first time in Liberia’s post-conflict era, signaling a significant advancement in the nation’s maritime and logistics infrastructure. Enabled through a collaborative effort between the National Port Authority (NPA), APM Terminals Liberia, and the Liberia Maritime Authority (LIMA), the initiative now allows vessels to berth and depart around the clock. This operational shift is expected to boost port efficiency, cut vessel turnaround times, and create broader opportunities for trade and logistics growth across Liberia, as reported by Container News.

Strengthening Port Infrastructure Through Investment and Collaboration

The launch of 24-hour marine operations at the Freeport of Monrovia is being hailed as a transformative step toward developing a more efficient and globally competitive port system in Liberia. Hon. Sekou A. M. Dukuly, head of the National Port Authority (NPA), described the initiative as a significant advancement toward the country’s long-term maritime vision.

To support the expanded operations, APM Terminals Liberia has invested over $4 million in key infrastructure upgrades. This includes the addition of a marine pilot boat, a patrol boat, three reach stackers, and two empty container handlers—equipment that will play a vital role in enhancing operational efficiency and safety standards at the port.

“This is a clear example of what long-term investment and strong partnership can achieve,” noted Jan Buijze, Acting Managing Director of APM Terminals Liberia. Speaking at the launch event, Ms. Birna Ósk Einarsdóttir, Global Chief Commercial Officer of APM Terminals, emphasized that the ability to operate at night not only generates new employment opportunities but also strengthens Liberia’s position in international trade.

Vice President Koung reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing a robust port infrastructure under the ARREST agenda, which aims to drive inclusive growth through transparency and global compliance. He concluded by stating that Liberia remains open and ready for business.
