Wattlab & HGK Launch First Hybrid Solar Inland Cargo Vessel

18

  • Dutch solar innovator Wattlab has equipped HGK Shipping’s Blue Marlin with a solar energy system, making it the first inland cargo vessel globally capable of hybrid sailing powered by solar energy.
  • The ship is outfitted with 192 solar panels, delivering up to 35 kW and integrated with four diesel generators to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
  • The automated energy system enables peak shaving and optimizes energy distribution, lowering the vessel’s operational costs and environmental footprint.

Wattlab, the Dutch maritime solar technology firm, has successfully delivered a cutting-edge solar energy system for HGK Shipping’s Blue Marlin, marking a world first for inland shipping. This innovation enables the vessel to sail using a hybrid propulsion system powered in part by solar energy—an important step toward decarbonizing inland waterway transport.

About the Vessel and Project Partners

HGK Shipping operates one of Europe’s largest inland fleets with 350 vessels, moving around 43 million tons of freight annually. Known for its leadership in dry bulk, gas, and chemical logistics, HGK Shipping partnered with Wattlab, a maritime solar expert also active in ocean-going shipping, to bring solar propulsion to its inland operations.

Integrated Hybrid Power System

The Blue Marlin is equipped with 192 solar panels that can generate up to 35 kilowatts under optimal conditions. These are integrated into the vessel’s electric propulsion system alongside four diesel generators. The solar-battery system is designed for peak shaving, which allows solar power and batteries to handle power surges—avoiding the need to switch on an extra generator.

Smart Energy Distribution for Maximum Efficiency

The vessel’s energy management system automatically allocates power to where it’s most needed, improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. This smart distribution ensures seamless operation and supports HGK’s broader efforts to transition to more sustainable transport.

Charting a Greener Course for Inland Shipping

With the launch of the Blue Marlin, HGK Shipping and Wattlab have set a new benchmark in inland maritime innovation. The integration of solar-hybrid systems not only showcases the potential of clean energy but also signals the start of a scalable solution for reducing emissions across the inland shipping industry.
