On July 10, 2025, a cargo ship was attacked and sunk in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels, resulting in the deaths of at least four crew members and leaving eleven others missing. The remaining crew were rescued after spending over 48 hours in the water, reports the Guardian.

Houthi Attack in Red Sea

The attack began on July 7, when the vessel was struck by drone boats and rocket-propelled grenades. Despite efforts to defend the ship, it sustained significant damage and began taking on water. By July 9, the ship had sunk, and the remaining crew members abandoned the vessel.

The Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was conducted in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. They also released a video showing the missile strike on the ship and reported rescuing several crew members and providing them with medical care.

International maritime forces coordinated search and rescue operations, leading to the recovery of six crew members. However, the fate of the remaining eleven crew members remains uncertain.

This incident marks a significant escalation in maritime security concerns in the region. The Houthi rebels have previously targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea, and this attack underscores the ongoing risks to international shipping routes.

Efforts to locate and rescue the missing crew members continue, with international naval forces and humanitarian organizations involved in the search operations. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for increased protection of commercial shipping in the area.
