VARD signs contract with Inkfish to build RV6000, one of the world’s most advanced research vessels. Vessel will support global ocean exploration with cutting-edge equipment and deep-sea capabilities. Delivery expected by Q2 2028

VARD-Inkfish Collaboration for Scientific Advancement

Norwegian shipbuilder VARD, a subsidiary of the Fincantieri Group, has signed a €200+ million contract with Inkfish, a U.S.-based philanthropic research organization, to design and build the RV6000—a next-generation, custom-built research vessel. The project reinforces both entities’ commitment to scientific exploration and environmental understanding.

“The agreement with InkFish confirms the role of VARD and the Fincantieri Group as key technology partners in the design and construction of highly specialized and advanced naval units,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO, Fincantieri Group.

RV6000: Technical Features and Capabilities

The RV6000 is purpose-built for seafloor mapping, ROV operations, and supporting deep-sea submersibles. Key specifications include:

  • Length: 100 meters | Beam: 20.7 meters | Speed: Up to 15 knots

  • Autonomy: 30 days at sea | Crew & Scientists Capacity: Up to 70

  • Submersible Support: 2 manned subs, ROV operations up to 6,000 meters depth

  • Advanced Hydroacoustics: High-res mapping (0.5° x 1° resolution), full-depth water column analysis

  • Deck Equipment: Stern A-frame, starboard AHC offshore crane (up to 2,500 meters), large hangar

Design and Sustainability Excellence

The vessel features hybrid power and propulsion, optimized hull for mapping and motion stability, and anti-roll technologies for exceptional station keeping. Designed with DNV Comfort Class standards, RV6000 includes:

  • Noise & vibration minimization

  • Onboard laboratories, workshops, and offices

  • High-standard accommodation and recreational spaces

Delivery Timeline and Global Impact

The hull will be constructed in Romania, with final outfitting and delivery in Norway, managed entirely by VARD. The delivery is scheduled for Q2 2028.
RV6000 will join Inkfish’s growing fleet, alongside RV Hydra and RV Dagon, with a mission to provide open-source marine data, supporting collaborative ocean research globally.

“This collaboration is based on a shared vision rooted in scientific progress and technological innovation, leveraging our engineering know-how to develop a vessel that will set a new benchmark in support of global research. The project reflects our commitment to driving the technological advancement of the naval sector and to addressing, with vision and expertise, the challenges of an ever-evolving global market, transforming them into opportunities for growth and innovation” added Folgiero.
