Year-on-year figures for May 2025 show that global seaborne container trade rose by 1.8%, maintaining a generally upward trend. Of the trade routes tracked, thirty-four corridors reported growth, while fifteen saw declines. North America emerged as a notable area of weakness, with both exports and imports shrinking—imports by 9.4% and exports by 8.1%. The steepest fall occurred within intra-North American trade, which dropped significantly by 26.6%.
While the growth rate for May slowed compared to the same month in 2024, it remained positive. So far in 2025, February has been the only month to register a contraction in trade volume. Looking at the broader period from January to May, the cumulative data shows a 5.0% increase compared to the same period last year. However, declines in North American and sub-Saharan African exports, along with reduced Australian imports, tempered overall gains.
