- Nation Aims to Transform Ports and Shipping with Clean Energy.
- Milestone Voyages Highlight China’s Progress in Low-Carbon Vessels.
- Digital Push: AI, 5G, and Automation Reshape Chinese Ports.
In celebration of the 20th National Maritime Day, China has rolled out an exciting proposal aimed at making its maritime sector greener, smarter, and more connected to the global market. With around 95% of its trade depending on sea routes, the country is determined to align its shipping industry with the Sustainable Development Goals, reports The Daily CPEC.
A Push for Low-Carbon and Eco-Friendly Shipping
The Ministry of Transport reports that China remains a global leader in port handling capacity, fleet size, shipbuilding output, and the overall scale of its marine economy, which exceeded 10 trillion yuan (about $1.4 trillion) in 2024.
This proposal lays out an ambitious vision to revamp maritime infrastructure through clean energy initiatives. China is set to improve green ports, eco-friendly vessels, and sustainable shipping lanes. The aim is to create a clean, safe, and efficient energy system that prioritises reducing emissions and safeguarding marine ecosystems.
Recent Green Shipping Milestones
China’s commitment to sustainable shipping is already visible through several recent projects:
- Yuan Hai Kou: This impressive vessel, the largest PV-LNG dual-fuel car carrier in the country, made its inaugural journey to Greece in July. It produces a whopping 410,000 kWh of solar energy each year, which helps to cut down carbon emissions by 346 tonnes and saves 111 tonnes of fuel in the process.
- Anhui: On June 28, Anhui made history as the world’s first pure ammonia-powered ship, completing its first voyage with nearly zero CO₂ emissions.
- COSCO SHIPPING Yangpu: Earlier in June, China unveiled its first 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship. This innovative ship can switch fuels based on its route, leading to a reduction of around 120,000 tonnes in annual emissions, equivalent to planting 6.7 million trees!
By the end of 2024, China is set to have a strong fleet of eco-friendly vessels, boasting over 600 LNG-powered ships, 485 electric ships, and many more that run on methanol and hydrogen.
Pushing Forward with Smart Maritime Technologies
China is also making significant investments in maritime technology. The proposal outlines ambitions for achieving technological independence and becoming a leader in smart shipbuilding and intelligent navigation systems.
The goal is to speed up digital transformation in the industry by leveraging AI, big data, and automation. So far, China has established 23 automated container terminals and 29 automated dry bulk terminals, complete with 5G-enabled autonomous trucks and remotely operated cranes.
Promoting Global Collaboration and Innovation
In addition to focusing on green and digital growth, China has once again emphasised its dedication to working together on maritime governance. This proposal aims to boost international teamwork in marine technology, enhance the protection of intellectual property, and promote a richer exchange of culture and talent. The goal is to create a more inclusive and innovative environment throughout the global shipping industry.
