MPA Partners with InstaSG to Spotlight Singapore’s Maritime Heritage through Visual Storytelling

21

In honor of Singapore’s 60th year of independence (SG60), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has teamed up with InstaSG for a special 2025 edition of the long-running Mad About Singapore initiative.

Launched at the Singapore Maritime Gallery, this edition invites the public to celebrate the nation’s identity and maritime legacy through Instagram photography under the co-theme #MaritimeSG.

Capturing Maritime Singapore Through the Lens

Originally started in 2014, Mad About Singapore encourages Singaporeans to share their personal reflections through photos—from everyday life and culture to national identity. For 2025, the campaign integrates #MaritimeSG, highlighting Singapore’s role as a global maritime hub.

A key moment of this campaign was a photowalk at PSA Pasir Panjang Terminal, where 45 photography enthusiasts had rare access to capture behind-the-scenes port operations. The effort merges public creativity with industry visibility, encouraging deeper appreciation of Singapore’s maritime story.

Visual Storytelling and Recognition

From a nationwide call for entries, the top 100 photographs have been selected for display at the Singapore Maritime Gallery from 12 to 20 July, arranged in the shape of Singapore island. A special #MaritimeSG panel features over 30 photographs emphasizing the critical role of maritime trade in daily life.

Key winners include:

  • #MaritimeSG Special Prize: Wong Wah Kean (@wongwahkean) – for his powerful image of silhouetted vessels at sea.

  • Top Prizes: William Ong (@ongwill) and Victor Zhuo (@victor_zhuo).

  • Instagrammers of the Year: William Ong and Alan Ng (@_5fivegraphy) – each of whom will have 16 signature photographs showcased.

Nikon Singapore, the official programme partner, has supported the campaign with camera gear, workshops, and Nikon School instructors, enriching the learning and creative journey for participants.

Exhibition Goes Nationwide with Maritime Education

Beyond the Gallery, the exhibition will travel to four major shopping malls from 21 July to 17 August, including:

  • Waterway Point

  • The Centrepoint

  • Funan

  • Westgate

In addition, visitors can explore the “Tides of Time” heritage section and the “Future is Now” zone at the Maritime Gallery—showcasing Singapore’s maritime past and its transition toward a greener, smarter industry.

By blending visual storytelling, maritime history, and public engagement, the Mad About Singapore 2025 campaign and exhibition offer a unique way to celebrate SG60. With strong institutional support and widespread participation, the initiative not only honors the nation’s maritime roots but also inspires the next generation to appreciate Singapore’s role in global trade and innovation.
