- Decarb Hub and MMMCZCS Expand Collaboration on Ammonia Safety.
- New Alliance Aims to Accelerate Zero-Emission Vessel Development.
- Decarb Hub to Support Fuel Transition and Seafarer Safety Initiatives.
Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, affectionately known as The Decarb Hub, has officially teamed up with the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Centre for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) as a Knowledge Partner. This partnership is a big leap forward in the collaboration that kicked off in 2021, focusing on safety and risk management for ammonia as a marine fuel, reports The Decarb Hub.
Supporting the Transition to Zero Emissions
In its role as a Knowledge Partner, the Decarb Hub will lend its scientific and strategic know-how to help the Centre in its mission to speed up the safe and sustainable decarbonisation of global shipping.
“The Decarb Hub has established itself as an independent actor, not-for-profit research and action unit, combining technical insight, systems thinking, and a deep understanding of maritime transition pathways. Their approach aligns closely with our ambition to accelerate a safe and sustainable transition to zero emissions,” said Bo Cerup-Simonsen, CEO of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Centre for Zero Carbon Shipping.
Enhancing Seafarer Safety Through Human Factor Integration
One of the standout contributions from The Decarb Hub is its focus on Human Factor Integration (HFI) to boost seafarer safety. The Hub’s Human Safety & Risk team is set to collaborate closely with the Centre’s technical experts, sharing insights in areas like risk and safety engineering, HFI, and policy development. A special spotlight will be on safely implementing alternative marine fuels, including ammonia.
Their efforts will involve using quantitative risk methods, weaving safety principles into design, creating effective mitigation strategies, and providing technical advice on how to incorporate HFI into new vessel fuel systems.
Driving Scalable Adoption of Sustainable Marine Fuels
James Forsdyke, Managing Director of The Decarb Hub, highlighted the strategic significance of this partnership in making tangible strides toward zero-emission shipping.
“We are proud to collaborate with the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Centre for Zero Carbon Shipping as a Knowledge Partner to support its work in the design and operation of zero-emission vessels. By integrating our expertise and experience in green corridor development, quantitative risk assessment, and seafarer competency mapping with the Centre’s world-leading capabilities in operational safety and fuel transition modelling, we look forward to driving the safe and scalable adoption of sustainable fuels across the international fleet to deliver meaningful progress toward a zero-emission maritime future.”
A Shared Commitment to Industry Transformation
This partnership highlights the commitment of both organisations to revolutionising the maritime industry through teamwork, comprehensive data sharing, and interdisciplinary research.
The Decarb Hub was created as an independent, non-profit initiative through a collaboration between the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, a global charity dedicated to engineering a safer world, and Lloyd’s Register Group, a prominent maritime professional services provider with a rich history spanning over 260 years.
