  • PSA Antwerp has joined the Zero Emissions Port Alliance to support decarbonization in terminal operations.
  • The company is exploring fully electric straddle carriers to address its highest source of direct emissions in Belgium.
  • Challenges include equipment interoperability and a lack of standardized charging infrastructure.
  • PSA aims to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.

PSA Antwerp has joined the Zero Emissions Port Alliance (ZEPA), a collaborative initiative launched at COP28 in 2023 by DP World and APM Terminals to promote the adoption of battery-powered container handling equipment. ZEPA brings together terminal operators, ports, and equipment manufacturers to drive the shift toward low-carbon port operations.

PSA Antwerp is currently assessing the use of fully electric straddle carriers as a key step in reducing its carbon footprint, with the majority of direct emissions in Belgium attributed to this equipment, according to Francis De Ruytter, PSA’s head of sustainability for Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Americas. However, the transition is not without challenges. Managing director Edward Tah highlighted issues such as the lack of interoperability among equipment from different manufacturers and the limited standardized charging infrastructure.

Despite these hurdles, PSA aims to accelerate decarbonization efforts by working with industry partners to scale up the deployment of zero-emission solutions. The company has set a goal to cut its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels and reach net zero by 2050, as reported by Lloyd’s List Intelligence.
