- PIN-Based Container Release to Be Replaced by Digital Authorisation.
- Secure Release Order Ensures Traceable and Exclusive Pick-Up Rights.
- Maersk Adopts ‘German Ports’ Platform for Standardised Release Process.
Maersk aims to keep all stakeholders informed about an upcoming change to the import container release process at the German seaports of Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven. Starting on October 1, 2025, and by the legal requirements for Hamburg and Bremerhaven, the existing PIN-based container release system will be replaced by a new digital authorisation system, known as the secure release order, reports Maersk.
Goal of the Secure Release Process
The secure release order aims to boost the safety and traceability of supply chains by ensuring that only one authorised and identifiable party can access and pick up full import containers at any given time. This initiative is designed to support secure logistics operations and provide better protection for both customers and communities.
Implementation via the German Ports Platform
To roll out this new process, Maersk will utilise the “German Ports” community platform, which offers a standardised and secure solution that aligns with the systems already in use by local terminal operators.
Process and System Changes
Under the new process:
- Release PINs will no longer be issued.
- Pick-up authorisations will be digitally issued through the “German Ports” platform.
- All authorisations will be encrypted and securely transmitted, ensuring a transparent and auditable chain of custody.
Early Registration Strongly Recommended
To ensure readiness for this transition, it is strongly advised that all involved parties:
- Register on the “German Ports” platform at the earliest opportunity
- Obtain the required platform ID
- Complete all technical and procedural onboarding requirements
This will help ensure seamless continuation of import container pick-up operations upon implementation of the new system.
