Shanghai Port has emerged as a major hub for China’s automobile exports, recording over 1.27 million units shipped in the first half of 2025—a 13% year-on-year increase, according to Shanghai Customs.
Rapid Growth in Export Volume
Auto exports from Shanghai Port have soared from 379,000 units in 2020 to 2.39 million in 2024, reflecting an impressive 58.4% average annual growth rate.
In H1 2025 alone, the Haitong International Automobile Terminal in Waigaoqiao handled 715,000 units, up 13.7% year-on-year.
Expanding Global Reach
Currently, Shanghai Port’s export network spans 131 countries and regions, with 2–3 ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) vessels departing daily, delivering Chinese-made vehicles to international markets.
Efficient Logistics and Customs Support
Shanghai Customs attributes the growth to improved logistics and faster clearance. Key measures include:
-
Appointment-based services to reduce vessel wait times
-
“Green channels” for quicker export procedures
-
Enhanced coordination for priority vehicle shipments
