  • Lloyd’s Register is the first to be authorised by the MCA to certify ROUVs under WBC3 Annex 2.
  • Certification applies to unmanned vessels under 24 meters operating in UK waters.
  • The authorisation allows LR to provide full end-to-end certification services.
  • This milestone supports the growing demand for autonomous maritime operations.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has become the first Certifying Authority to receive authorisation from the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to certify remotely operated and unmanned vessels (ROUVs) under the Workboat Code Edition 3 (WBC3) Annex 2. This authorisation applies to vessels under 24 meters and ensures they meet specific safety and operational standards to operate legally within UK waters.

With this milestone, LR can now deliver full certification services for ROUVs, combining this new capability with its existing Unmanned Marine Systems Code. The achievement marks a significant step in the advancement of maritime autonomy, with LR’s Marine & Offshore Specialist, Jordan McRuvie, noting that the approval reflects both technical leadership and strong industry collaboration. The organisation is now preparing to issue its first certification under this new framework.
