Recently, an armed robbery incident occurred onboard an LPG tanker anchored at Chittagong ‘C’ Anchorage, Bangladesh. Fortunately, no crew members were harmed and no items were stolen.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard responded swiftly, apprehended the perpetrators, and handed them over to local authorities for legal action.
Advisory from ReCAAP ISC
Following the incident, ReCAAP ISC advised vessels to:

Maintain enhanced vigilance

Strengthen watchkeeping at anchorages and ports

Coastal states should increase patrols and enforcement
Situation Update: Sulu-Celebes Seas & Eastern Sabah
Although the last abduction incident occurred on 17 Jan 2020, the area continues to be monitored.
In Jan 2025, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) downgraded the threat level for abduction of crew in the region to LOW, indicating no current signs of planned attacks.
ReCAAP ISC’s 14 Feb 2025 advisory urges vessels transiting the area to:

Report incidents promptly to the Philippines’ Operation Centre and Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM)

Maintain communication with relevant authorities throughout transit

While the Chittagong incident ended without harm, it underscores the ongoing need for vigilance in high-risk areas. Regular updates, cross-agency coordination, and crew preparedness remain vital to ensuring maritime safety in Asian waters.
