According to Trade Winds, which cites Alphaliner, South Korea’s CK Line has inked a deal with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, the largest private shipbuilder in China, to build two feeder container ships, each with a capacity of 1,100 TEU. The contract is valued at a total of $92 million, with each ship costing $46 million. These vessels are expected to be delivered in 2027, reports iMarine.

Slower Order Intake for Yangzijiang in 2025

If this order is confirmed, it would be just the fifth publicly announced order for Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in 2025. This year has seen a notable slowdown in order activity compared to 2024.

The four previous orders for 2025 include:

  1. 2+2 4,400 TEU container ships for Thailand’s RCL
  2. 2+2 3,000 TEU container ships for Vietnam’s HAIANTS
  3. 2 83,000 DWT bulk carriers for Greece’s Lepta Shipping
  4. 1 75,000 DWT oil tanker for a Greek shipowner

These contracts bring the total to 9+4 vessels, with delivery dates set between 2027 and 2028.

Strong Backlog Despite Fewer New Orders

Even with a slower pace for new orders, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s backlog remains robust. According to the company’s “2025 First Quarter Business Update Announcement” released on May 22, 2025, they currently have an order book totaling 8.73 million compensated gross tons, which translates to 230 ships valued at approximately $23.19 billion (around RMB 166.9 billion). These orders are scheduled to extend through 2030.

Interestingly, about 74% of Yangzijiang’s current orders are for clean energy vessels, which encompass a variety of ship types, including container ships, bulk carriers, gas carriers, and oil tankers.

First LR1 Oil/Chemical Tanker Delivered

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has also reached a significant milestone in its delivery schedule. The company successfully delivered its first LR1-class oil and chemical tanker, which was ordered by METROSTAR. The contract for this ship was signed on April 20, 2023, and it was delivered and began operations on July 5, 2025.

This delivery highlights the company’s growing expertise in producing oil and chemical tankers, marking
