Setting the Course for Egypt’s Green Shipping Future

Egypt’s national efforts to decarbonize the shipping industry are being formulated into a National Action Plan, with support from the IMO’s GreenVoyage2050 Programme. Egypt’s National Action Plan (NAP) will address greenhouse gas emissions from ships and ports, reports IMO.

Egypt Charts a Greener Maritime Vision

With mounting global pressure to decarbonize the shipping industry, Egypt is asserting itself as a regional leader in sustainable maritime development. Leveraging its strategic position at the crossroads of global trade via the Suez Canal, the country is investing in clean energy, port modernization, and green fuel infrastructure. These steps align closely with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) greenhouse gas strategy and reflect Egypt’s broader commitment to climate action.

The Ministry of Transport, the Suez Canal Authority, and the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) have all embraced sustainability as a central tenet of their long-term development plans. Major ports such as Alexandria and Port Said are being upgraded to support lower-emission operations, with increasing emphasis on digitalization, energy efficiency, and alternative marine fuels.

Green Shipping Workshop Drives Collaboration

A key milestone in Egypt’s green shipping journey was the recent Green Shipping Workshop held in partnership with the IMO and Ministry of Transport. The event brought together national and international stakeholders—including port authorities, energy experts, shipping companies, and environmental regulators—to discuss practical pathways toward maritime decarbonization.

Participants explored critical areas such as fuel transition strategies, port readiness, carbon pricing, and green finance. The workshop also highlighted Egypt’s potential to act as a regional green fuel hub, leveraging its geographic location, renewable energy capacity, and expanding infrastructure for hydrogen and ammonia production. Technical training sessions further emphasized the importance of capacity building to prepare the workforce for new environmental standards and technologies.

Paving the Way Through Innovation and Policy

The outcomes of the workshop are expected to inform Egypt’s national maritime strategy and upcoming pilot projects. Collaborative efforts are already underway to explore green shipping corridors, especially between Egypt, Europe, and East Africa, and to develop port-based emissions tracking systems. Ongoing studies will assess the feasibility of shore-side electrification and low-emission bunkering services at key transit points.

With a blend of policy reforms, regional partnerships, and strategic investments, Egypt is poised to become a green gateway between continents. As the global maritime sector accelerates its transition to a sustainable future, Egypt’s leadership in hosting inclusive dialogues and shaping practical solutions marks a defining step forward.
