- Around 50 containers were lost overboard in rough seas off Peru’s coast.
- The incident occurred while the vessel was anchored in Callao Bay.
- Port operations were briefly suspended for inspections and salvage work.
- No hazardous materials were reported among the lost containers.
Rough weather conditions off the coast of Peru on August 1 led to approximately 50 containers falling overboard from a container vessel anchored in Callao Bay. Heavy rolling at anchor caused some of the containers at the stern to topple into the sea, according to the report published by Baird Maritime.
As a precaution, the Port of Callao was temporarily closed while maritime authorities halted vessel traffic in the bay to allow close-up inspections and recovery operations. Local civil defense officials confirmed that none of the lost containers contained hazardous materials, and tugs were deployed to assist in the retrieval process.
Authorities in Peru have launched an investigation to determine the sequence of events that caused the incident. This marks the second container-related occurrence in Latin American waters within the same week, with another vessel experiencing a stack collapse days earlier during severe weather, resulting in damage to about 40 containers.
