Asyad Shipping Company SAOG, Oman’s state-owned maritime transport giant, is setting benchmarks in sustainable shipping with over $64 million invested in decarbonisation initiatives. In its 2024 Sustainability Report, the company reveals significant progress in reducing carbon emissions across its 89-vessel fleet.
These efforts align with Oman Vision 2040 and global climate goals, reinforcing Asyad’s commitment to environmental responsibility and operational efficiency.
Technological Innovations Powering Emission Reductions
Asyad’s emission reduction strategy is driven by the integration of advanced, fuel-efficient technologies into its operations. One standout initiative is the installation of Rotor Sails, which harness wind energy using rotating vertical cylinders. Depending on wind conditions, this technology can reduce fuel use and emissions by 5% to 30%, decreasing engine reliance and promoting cleaner voyages.
The company is also upgrading main engines on 22 vessels through collaborations with Wartsila and MAN. These enhancements are designed to improve fuel efficiency and performance, with project completion expected in 2025. Further efficiency gains are being realized through the use of Hans Jensen cylinder lubricators, which minimize oil consumption and enhance engine health in large two-stroke engines.
Research, Partnerships, and Smart Monitoring for Future Sustainability
Looking beyond current operations, Asyad Shipping is investing in cutting-edge research and innovation. In collaboration with the German University of Technology (GUtech), the company is exploring various Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) techniques, including post-combustion and direct air capture, to mitigate its carbon footprint.
In tandem, Asyad is preparing to deploy a vessel performance monitoring system to comply with global standards like the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). This digital solution will help optimize real-time fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
Additionally, new LNG dual-fuel vessels will be equipped with shaft generators, enabling power generation from the main engine shaft rather than burning additional fuel. This is expected to save 2–4% in fuel consumption, equal to about 2–4 tonnes of fuel oil per day.
Asyad Shipping’s multifaceted sustainability initiatives underscore its leadership in green maritime practices. Through technology adoption, international partnerships, and forward-looking investments, the company is actively shaping a cleaner, more efficient future for global shipping. These efforts not only contribute to Oman’s Vision 2040 but also position Asyad as a model for environmentally responsible shipping on the international stage.
