Valenciaport, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, has launched a project aimed at reinforcing border control measures at the Port of València and the Port of Sagunto.
Supported by the European Union’s Next Generation funds, this initiative seeks to improve the management of external borders, enhance migration flow control, and aid in the prevention of terrorism and other serious crimes.
EU-Funded Technology for Enhanced Security
The project is 75% co-financed by the European Union through the Next Generation programme. It includes the implementation of two key systems: the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). EES will register entry and exit data for third-country nationals, while also recording refusals of access.
ETIAS will assess potential risks posed by travellers to public security or health before granting travel authorisations. Additionally, verification, monitoring, and registration tablets will be acquired to streamline identity checks and border operations.
Pilot Facility at the Port of València
As part of the initiative, a pilot container will be installed at the Port of València. This specialised facility will be equipped with large windows, thermal insulation, lighting, furniture, and state-of-the-art passport-reading technology. Designed for efficiency, it will enhance traveller processing and ensure accurate identity verification. Once operational, the system will play a vital role in preventing, detecting, and investigating criminal activities.
With its combination of advanced technology and EU-backed funding, the Valenciaport project marks a significant step forward in border security for Spain’s key maritime hubs. By integrating EES and ETIAS systems and piloting new processing facilities, the initiative promises to improve security, efficiency, and traveller management before the year’s end.
