Klaipėda Port Nears Completion Of Green Hydrogen Station For Maritime Use

17

Klaipėda State Seaport Authority is progressing toward a significant milestone in Lithuania’s green maritime transition. The company Gevalda is expected to finish construction of the country’s first green hydrogen station by the end of this year, with installation and testing of equipment to follow.

This facility will play a central role in powering the first Lithuanian vessel driven by green hydrogen, marking a major step toward sustainable port operations.

Construction Timeline and Capacity

The hydrogen station’s construction is planned for completion by the end of 2025, with all installation and testing works finalized by February 2026. Once operational, the facility will produce around 127 tonnes of hydrogen annually.

A portion of this output will fuel the pioneering green hydrogen-powered vessel currently under construction, which began its in-water phase in early 2025 after a keel-laying ceremony in June 2024.

Strategic Importance and Funding

According to Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, the project has reached a visible and critical stage. The hydrogen station is a cornerstone of the port’s vision to remain green, competitive, and attractive.

Funded under the EU’s NextGenerationEU recovery and resilience facility, the project has an estimated total cost of €12 million, with approximately €6 million coming from EU funds via the Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan Next Generation Lithuania.

With construction already underway and completion targeted within the next year, Klaipėda Port is positioning itself as a leader in green maritime infrastructure. The hydrogen station will not only support innovative vessels but also reinforce Lithuania’s commitment to sustainable, future-oriented port development.
