- ITOCHU to offtake ammonia for bunkering operations in Singapore.
- L&T’s land acquisition at Kandla boosts green energy plans.
- Partnership supports zero-emission marine fuel adoption.
L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), a fully-owned branch of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has teamed up with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation to kick off a Joint Development Agreement aimed at creating and rolling out a 300 KTPA green ammonia project in Kandla, Gujarat, reports L&T.
Project Scope and Offtake Plan
As part of this agreement, LTEG and ITOCHU will collaborate on the development of the green ammonia facility, with ITOCHU set to purchase the product for bunkering uses in Singapore. This project is all about pushing forward clean energy solutions for the maritime industry, which aligns perfectly with the sustainability and decarbonization goals of both companies.
Strategic Land Acquisition and Vision
Last year, L&T secured a significant piece of land in Kandla for green hydrogen and green ammonia initiatives. This partnership bolsters LTEG’s strategic goal of establishing a foothold in the green energy value chain and supports ITOCHU’s efforts to advocate for low-carbon ammonia as a zero-emission fuel for marine applications.
Leadership Perspectives
Mr Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director & President, L&T, said: “As the global energy landscape shifts decisively towards sustainability, L&T remains deeply committed to driving the clean energy transition through innovation, strategic partnerships, and engineering excellence. The partnership with ITOCHU reflects L&T’s larger vision of enabling a cleaner, greener future through sustainable business focus”.
Mr Hiroyuki Tsubai, Executive Vice President, Member of the Board, President, Machinery Company of ITOCHU Corporation, said: “Through this joint development with one of the largest and most respected companies in India’s private sector, L&T Group, our initiatives to introduce low-carbon ammonia to the maritime sector as an alternative zero-emission fuel will be reinforced. With this collaboration, Kandla, located on the west coast of India, will become the principal production centre of green ammonia for ITOCHU’s bunkering operations in Singapore”.
India’s Competitive Advantage in Green Energy
India is sitting on a goldmine of renewable resources and affordable electricity, making it a prime candidate to take the lead in the global green hydrogen market and its byproducts. The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims for a production capacity of at least 5 MMTPA by 2030, backed by investments that could top USD 100 billion. This ambitious plan is set to spark industrial innovation, create green jobs, and boost India’s energy security.
