The Port of Gibraltar has reported fluctuations in bunker calls and vessel traffic this year, with a slight dip recorded in August but stronger activity in ship-to-ship (STS) transfers. The latest government figures highlight how the Mediterranean hub continues to play a key role in regional shipping despite shifting demand patterns.
Fluctuations in Bunker Demand
In August, Gibraltar saw 447 bunker calls, a drop from both 472 in June and 456 in July 2024. However, the year-to-date figures show a slight improvement, with 2,995 vessels calling for bunkers between January and July 2025, compared to 2,966 during the same period last year. This suggests that while monthly volumes vary, overall bunker demand remains relatively steady.
Surge in Ship-to-Ship Operations
One notable development has been the rise in STS transfers, with seven operations recorded in July 2025, the highest monthly total so far this year. This marks a significant increase from just one STS transfer in July 2024, pointing to Gibraltar’s growing role as a center for such activities. Meanwhile, total vessel calls reached 850 in July, slightly higher than the 832 calls in July 2024 but lower than the 873 calls registered in June 2025.
The latest statistics reveal a mixed performance for Gibraltar’s maritime sector. While bunker calls dipped slightly in August, the increase in STS transfers highlights the port’s flexibility and importance in regional shipping. Overall, Gibraltar continues to serve as a key hub for bunkering and vessel activity in the Mediterranean, with long-term demand showing signs of stability.
