Navigating Digitalization: A Solution to Seafarer Fatigue and Paperwork

10

In a statement, Fabian Fussek, the Co-Founder and CEO of Kaiko Systems, highlighted the shipping industry’s dependence on outdated, paper-based compliance methods. He warns that this reliance places a significant burden on crew members and compromises safety. Fussek advocates for the industry to embrace digitalization, not as a replacement for human work, but as a tool to empower seafarers by streamlining processes.

The Problem with Paper-Based Compliance

Fussek points out that many vessels still rely on physical logs, spreadsheets, and manual reports to meet compliance requirements. A major issue is the practice of adjusting work and rest hour records to meet regulations on paper, even when the reality on board is different. This often happens because crews are overworked, leading to fatigue, which is a key factor in many maritime incidents. According to Fussek, this fatigue goes unnoticed by inspectors until a major incident, such as a recent collision in the North Sea, occurs.

The Solution: Digitalization and Transparency

Fussek believes that technology can help solve these issues by automating routine tasks and accurately capturing data. He argues that digital tools can provide a true picture of on-board conditions to owners, charterers, and regulators. Kaiko Systems offers a platform that digitizes inspections, maintenance, and compliance reporting into a single, secure interface. This helps reduce paperwork for crews, ensures data accuracy, and gives managers clear visibility into where more support or staff are needed.

Empowering Seafarers

Fussek also addresses the misconception that digital tools are an added burden or reduce seafarer autonomy. He argues that the real burden is the excessive paperwork that forces crews to choose between following paper rules and the reality of their workload. When implemented correctly, digitalization can free up seafarers from manual reporting, allowing them to focus on their primary responsibilities: operating vessels safely and professionally. Kaiko Systems sees this shift as a crucial step toward building trust, transparency, and safer working conditions throughout the shipping industry.
