HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), the intermediate holding company of shipbuilding giant HD Hyundai, announced on Wednesday that it has finalized an agreement with Doosan Enerbility to acquire Doosan Vina, its Vietnamese subsidiary, for ₩290 billion ($207 million). The transaction involves HD KSOE purchasing Doosan Enerbility’s full 100% stake in the company, marking a strategic move to broaden its capabilities in the eco-friendly shipbuilding sector, according to The Korea Herald.
Doosan Enerbility’s Strategy
For Doosan Enerbility, the sale provides capital to strengthen investment in fast-growing sectors aligned with global energy transitions. The company stated that the ₩290 billion proceeds will be directed toward expanding its facilities for small modular reactors and advanced gas turbines—both technologies seeing accelerating demand as nations prioritize energy security and carbon reduction.
Doosan Vina’s Background and Role
Established in 2006 within the Dung Quat Economic Zone in Quang Ngai Province, Central Vietnam, Doosan Vina has built a reputation for producing thermal power plant boilers, large port cranes, and modules for liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities. This manufacturing expertise and strategic location provide HD KSOE with a regional production hub to support both ongoing projects and future expansion.
HD KSOE’s Expansion Plans
Following the acquisition, HD KSOE confirmed it will maintain Doosan Vina’s existing business operations while repurposing the site as a key base for building independent tanks and port cranes for the Asian market. Independent tanks are critical components for next-generation eco-friendly vessels, including LNG-fueled ships, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers, ammonia carriers, and liquefied carbon dioxide carriers. The company emphasized that the acquisition strengthens its ability to deliver globally competitive, eco-friendly ship solutions.
Official Statement
An HD KSOE spokesperson noted that the deal was made possible through aligned corporate interests and government support. The spokesperson added: “By expanding our production capacity for eco-friendly equipment, we are positioned to maximize profitability and reinforce our competitiveness in the global market for sustainable vessels.”
