Viking Line Switches to Bio-LNG for FuelEU Maritime Compliance

17

  • Viking Line has begun operating its ro-ro vessels Viking Grace and Viking Glory on bio-LNG to support Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pooling service.
  • The collaboration strengthens Gasum’s ability to meet growing compliance demand as FuelEU Maritime rules tighten, with DNV verifying emissions data and compliance balances.
  • Viking Line expects to increase its bio-LNG use to 50%, significantly cutting emissions and advancing its fossil-free transition strategy.

Viking Line has started running its two ro-ro vessels, Viking Grace and Viking Glory, on bio-LNG to generate compliance credits for Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime (FEUM) pooling service. This development follows a Letter of Intent signed at the end of 2024 to strengthen collaboration in the regulatory pooling market. Both vessels operate daily between Finland’s Port of Turku and Sweden’s capital Stockholm, providing a reliable and predictable stream of compliance volumes for the pool, according to Gasum.

Rising Demand for FEUM Pooling

Gasum emphasized that demand for FuelEU Maritime pooling has grown rapidly, exceeding what it could supply through its own bunkering vessels alone. “It is central to the scale and stability of our service that we collaborate with trusted partners like Viking Line,” said Jacob Granqvist, Vice President of Maritime at Gasum. He added that the partnership expands access to the service for a wider group of shipowners while strengthening the long-standing relationship between the two companies.

Viking Line’s Sustainability Strategy

Viking Line CEO Jan Hanses highlighted that the company aims to be a leader in Finland’s maritime transition to a fossil-free future. The company has already been offering passengers and cargo customers the option to purchase biogas for the Turku–Stockholm route for two years. With this initiative, Viking Line plans to increase its bio-LNG consumption to 50%, enabling substantial emission reductions. “We are happy to work with Gasum to help the European maritime sector reduce emissions by expanding the use of biofuels,” Hanses said.

Reliable and Verified Compliance Pool

Gasum’s pooling service allows shipping companies to lower compliance costs while encouraging the adoption of renewable fuels. The company manages the pool, supplies bio-LNG, and enables over-compliance for vessels that continue using conventional fuels. To ensure credibility, Gasum applies DNV’s technology to monitor fuel consumption and emissions. At year-end, DNV will verify the pool’s compliance balance for EU reporting purposes.

Role of Bio-LNG and FuelEU Maritime Regulation

The pool relies on waste-based liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG), a renewable fuel that delivers life-cycle greenhouse gas emission reductions of up to 90% compared to marine gasoil. FuelEU Maritime, an EU regulation aimed at reducing the carbon intensity of maritime fuels, allows voluntary pooling of emission reductions across vessels. This regulatory framework provides both environmental and financial incentives for wider adoption of low-carbon fuel solutions.
