The Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding (CEMS) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) have partnered to open a new skill development extension centre in Kolkata to address the skills gap in India’s maritime industry.
Collaboration and Training Program
The new facility at GRSE’s Taratala unit, funded through GRSE’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, will provide a six-month training program for 100 candidates. The curriculum focuses on four high-demand maritime disciplines: Welding, Electrical, Structural Fittings, and Pipe Fittings. This is a hands-on program, splitting the training into three months of shop-floor learning followed by three months of on-the-job experience at GRSE facilities.
Goals and Impact
This partnership aims to create a direct path to employment for young professionals by providing them with industry-relevant skills. According to Cdr Gopi Krishna Sivvam IN (Retd.), COO of CEMS, the collaboration combines CEMS’s training expertise with GRSE’s industrial base to strengthen India’s shipbuilding capabilities and contribute to the growth of its maritime economy. The initiative underscores CEMS’s role as a leader in maritime training and GRSE’s commitment to nurturing skilled professionals.
