Port of Gothenburg Posts Strong H1 Growth

32

The Port of Gothenburg saw continued positive growth in the first half of the year, particularly in its container handling and rail transport. Efficiency improvements were also a key factor in its performance.

Port Operations and Efficiency

The port handled 470,000 containers (TEU) in the first half of the year, and an increase in the number of fully loaded containers contributed to greater efficiency. The port’s container terminal operator, APM Terminals, recorded its best-ever month in July. The port also welcomed two new shipping services: one connecting Gothenburg to the Baltic and another providing a direct route to and from Asia.

Rail Transport Achievements

Rail freight reached a record high, growing by 4 percent in the first six months and now accounting for over 60 percent of all container traffic. This trend is a result of growth at inland terminals across Sweden. The port anticipates an all-time high in rail volumes for the year, highlighting rail’s efficiency and environmental benefits, which also help to ease road congestion.

Trends Across Other Cargo Segments

Other parts of the port’s business showed mixed results. Intra-European RoRo traffic saw a slight increase of 1 percent. However, car handling and energy flows declined by 7 percent and 13 percent, respectively. Dry bulk handling experienced a significant drop of 43 percent, mainly due to reduced demand for construction materials. On the other hand, processed forest products continued to show a positive trend. The number of cruise ship calls also decreased compared to the previous year.
