BIO-UV Develops Containerised Ballast Water System

BIO-UV Group has developed a new containerized ballast water treatment system, designed to address compliance challenges for floating offshore wind projects. The system provides a flexible solution for on-site water treatment in various maritime operations.

System Development and Design

BIO-UV Group successfully adapted its BIO-SEA technology into a standard containerized unit. The system is specifically designed to help floating platforms, such as those used in offshore wind projects, meet ballast water regulations when moving through different territorial waters. Its modular and portable design also allows it to be used as a backup solution for ships with failed ballast water systems, or as a service provided by ports on barges or for lease.

Trial Results and Compliance

Trials of the system were conducted at Port-la-Nouvelle in France. The 300 cubic meters per hour unit successfully passed tests for both filtration and UV treatment. It also effectively handled the disposal of filter backwash, converting it into manageable waste for land-based disposal. Although biological trials faced limitations due to sampling and water variability, the discharge water consistently met the IMO D-2 standard for all operations, demonstrating its effectiveness in treating ballast water.

Commercial Applications and Future Outlook

The project was executed in two phases during 2024, focusing on engineering and testing, followed by market analysis and stakeholder engagement. BIO-UV Group has already launched the first commercial containerized unit under a “ballast-as-a-service” rental model. There has been interest from ports, particularly those in the Mediterranean, including those involved in the EU Treasure programme. This new system provides a scalable solution for both offshore wind and port operations, helping industries maintain environmental compliance and manage water responsibly.
