Maersk Closes In on COSCO in Intra-Asia Capacity Race

Alphaliner’s August review of the intra-Asia trade (excluding domestic routes) reveals that Danish shipping giant Maersk has made the biggest leap in capacity over the past year. They’ve added a whopping 100,000 teu, bringing their total operated slots to 298,134 teu, reports LinkedIn.

Closing in on COSCO

This impressive growth has almost narrowed the gap with the current market leader, COSCO SHIPPING, which still holds the crown with 300,491 teu deployed in the trade. Beyond their regional operations, COSCO also manages over 200,000 teu slots in the domestic Chinese market.

Robust Growth Across the Region

The intra-Asia trade is fiercely competitive, boasting at least 69 active carriers. The market has seen a solid 13% year-on-year growth, pushing total tonnage up to 2.4 Mteu.

Market Dynamics

The trade landscape is quite consolidated among the major players. The top 20 carriers dominate the scene, while all other operators together account for just 13% of the total capacity.
