  • HII expands beyond Newport News with new Charleston Operations in South Carolina to build submarine modules and aircraft carrier units.
  • Ingalls Shipbuilding partners across multiple states to construct and deliver outfitted structural units for Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
  • Six domestic partners are already engaged, with more under evaluation to support upcoming Navy programs.
  • International partnerships with Hyundai Heavy Industries and Babcock International Group strengthen throughput and global shipbuilding capacity.

HII is reinforcing its commitment to the Navy by expanding throughput through partnerships with shipyards and fabricators in multiple states. The approach is helping create new opportunities while enhancing the U.S. shipbuilding base, according to a release from HII.

Expanding Partnerships and Distributed Shipbuilding Model

At Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia, HII is expanding its operations beyond traditional facilities through the acquisition of a manufacturing site in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Now operating as Charleston Operations, the facility will produce completed submarine modules and structural components for aircraft carriers, with significant potential for future growth. Alongside this, HII has developed a network of manufacturing partners in Virginia and other states to deliver structural assemblies for upcoming submarines and aircraft carriers. This distributed shipbuilding model is designed to expand production and support the next generation of the Navy’s fleet.

At Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, select outfitted structural units for Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are being constructed, inspected, and accepted at partner sites before being integrated into the final configuration at Ingalls. These partners, chosen for their skilled labor and existing capacity outside the traditional labor market, are already engaged in early phases of destroyer work. Six shipbuilding partners across multiple states are participating, with additional packages under review to support the construction of DDGs 135, 137, and 139.

Beyond domestic efforts, HII is also advancing international collaborations to expand opportunities in both defense and commercial markets. Partnerships with Hyundai Heavy Industries and Babcock International Group aim to strengthen throughput, drive technological innovation, and broaden the global shipbuilding industrial base. These alliances are intended to leverage shared expertise, enhance efficiency, and open new pathways in the international defense sector.
