China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) has signed a contract with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC) for the construction of two 115,000-deadweight-ton (DWT) product/crude oil tankers. The agreement, witnessed by senior representatives from China Yangtze Shipping Group, Dalian Shipbuilding, CMES, and China State Shipbuilding Trading, underscores China’s push toward greener and more intelligent shipbuilding solutions.
Driving Green and Intelligent Transformation
Han Dongwang, chairman of Dalian Shipbuilding, highlighted that the shipping sector is at a crucial juncture of green and digital transformation. He emphasized the role of the national “dual carbon” strategy and the Yangtze River Economic Belt development plan in guiding shipbuilding innovation.
The new tankers will feature advanced technologies such as optimized hydrodynamics, energy-saving variable-frequency devices, and intelligent energy efficiency management systems. The vessels will also meet Phase 3 requirements of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), significantly reducing emissions and operating costs.
Strategic Partnerships and Industry Outlook
Ding Lei, general manager of China Yangtze Shipping Group, noted that the industry is undergoing major shifts and reiterated the importance of strategic cooperation with Dalian Shipbuilding.
By broadening collaboration, the group aims to deliver higher-quality ships across multiple vessel types. For CMES, a Shanghai-listed subsidiary of China Merchants Group, the newbuilds represent an important step in reinforcing its position as a leading oil and gas shipping company while advancing China’s environmental and maritime innovation goals.
The order for two 115,000 DWT tankers marks another milestone in China’s pursuit of greener, more efficient shipping solutions. By integrating advanced design features and aligning with national sustainability strategies, the collaboration between CMES and Dalian Shipbuilding reflects the maritime industry’s commitment to innovation, carbon reduction, and long-term competitiveness.
