In September 2025, Ningbo Zhoushan Port reached its annual throughput milestone, moving the achievement forward by nearly two months compared with 2024. This progress highlights both a surge in global trade activity and the port’s successful implementation of large-scale infrastructure, digitalization, and logistics strategies.
Expanding Infrastructure and Global Connectivity
Ningbo Zhoushan Port continues to strengthen its position as one of the busiest ports in the world through its “one port, two cores, twenty zones” development strategy. Major construction projects are underway at Meishan, Jintang, Daxie, and Liuheng, including container berths capable of handling over 10 million TEU and bulk cargo berths with an annual capacity exceeding 100 million tons.
The port currently runs 308 container shipping routes, with nearly 300 vessel calls each day, connecting ports across five continents. Its strong international connectivity ranks second globally, making it a critical hub in the evolving global trade landscape.
Innovation in Logistics and Smart Operations
Beyond infrastructure, the port is driving efficiency through new logistics models and digital transformation. The dual logistics system combining “sea-rail express” and “ocean express” has cut Europe-bound transit times by more than ten days. Later this month, the “China-Europe Arctic Express” will offer even faster connections, reaching the UK’s Port of Felixstowe in just 18 days.
Automation and smart technologies are also reshaping port operations. The proprietary “n-TOS+iECS” system enables remote-controlled cranes, unmanned trucks, and smart stowage, reducing crane operating time by over 1,000 minutes in certain cases. AI-driven navigation has improved gate efficiency by 7% and reduced vehicle deviation by over 10%.
Ningbo Zhoushan Port’s ability to advance its throughput milestone reflects long-term structural improvements rather than short-term fluctuations.
By expanding its hinterland network, promoting digitalized customs clearance, and strengthening global shipping links, the port has reinforced its role as a cornerstone of international trade. Its progress demonstrates how infrastructure expansion, smart technology, and innovative logistics can combine to accelerate global supply chain efficiency.
