CLdN, in partnership with Peel Ports Group, has announced plans to develop a new river berth for roll-on / roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels at the Port of Liverpool. This multi-million-pound investment aims to boost the Irish Sea market and enhance the efficiency of its freight services.
Project Details & Timeline
The proposed investment involves constructing a lock-free berth on the river Mersey, adjacent to CLdN’s existing facilities at Brocklebank / Langton Dock. This new berth will allow larger, more efficient CLdN ships to operate with higher cargo capacity. A formal application for consent is expected to be submitted in the second half of 2026, with construction potentially starting in early 2028.
Operational and Environmental Benefits
The new berth is expected to bring significant benefits, including increased operational flexibility and efficiency. The project will also enable a further reduction in the carbon footprint per freight unit, aligning with CLdN’s goal of using more environmentally friendly vessels. This development follows a recent investment program at Brocklebank Dock, which expanded cargo handling capacity and enabled the use of larger, greener ships on the Liverpool-Dublin route, a service that handles over 200,000 freight units annually.
Collaboration and Strategic Importance
The collaboration between CLdN and Peel Ports Group highlights the strategic importance of this project. Florent Maes, CLdN’s CEO, emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to developing its port infrastructure and providing essential freight services between Great Britain and Ireland. Peel Ports Group CEO, Claudio Veritiero, noted that the investment is a strong vote of confidence in the Port of Liverpool’s capability and sustainable growth, as the project will enhance supply chain efficiency, create skilled jobs, and secure lasting benefits for the region.
