HD Hyundai Deploys AI Humanoid Robots to Enhance Shipyard Safety & Productivity

On September 15, HD Hyundai Samho entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with LG CNS and HD Hyundai Robotics to accelerate the development of humanoid robots and logistics automation solutions for shipbuilding. The signing ceremony, held at Hyundai Samho’s panel factory, was attended by top executives including Kim Jae-eul, CEO of HD Hyundai Samho; Hyun Sin-kyun, CEO of LG CNS; Kim Wan-soo, CEO of HD Hyundai Robotics; and representatives from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), according to Marine Inisight.

Focus on Humanoid Robots and Logistics Automation

The collaboration aims to create humanoid robots capable of performing complex shipyard operations such as measurement, forming, welding, and control, alongside the development of an automated logistics system powered by Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs). These technologies are intended to take shipyard automation beyond the current capabilities of collaborative robots, addressing more demanding tasks like assembly, outfitting, and inspection.

Distinct Roles and Contributions

Each partner brings unique strengths to the initiative. HD Hyundai Samho will contribute manufacturing data and establish on-site infrastructure to support the projects. LG CNS will deliver an AI-powered data convergence platform designed specifically for shipbuilding environments, while HD Hyundai Robotics will focus on AI-driven motion control technologies tailored to shipyard processes. KSOE will enhance the collaboration with expertise in robotics, simulation, and welding innovations.

Enhancing Safety and Productivity

The shipbuilder emphasizes that this initiative will improve workplace safety by reducing high-risk tasks while simultaneously boosting productivity. Hyundai Samho has already demonstrated its commitment to automation through its Automation Innovation Center, launched in 2022, which has introduced collaborative robots and underwater hull-cleaning robots into its operations.

LG CNS contributes advanced capabilities in integrating AI into physical operations and developing management systems powered by large language models. HD Hyundai Robotics, with its proven track record in precision motion control solutions, further strengthens the effort to transform shipbuilding through cutting-edge robotics.
