Port Of Barcelona Marks One Year Of Onshore Power Supply At BEST Terminal

12

The Port of Barcelona is celebrating one year since the successful launch of its Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system at the BEST terminal. The milestone was first achieved when the MSC Mette, one of the world’s largest container ships, connected to the renewable-powered OPS system, allowing it to switch off its engines while docked.

This initiative has since been repeated thirty times, preventing 2,310 tons of CO₂ emissions and marking a major step toward greener port operations in the Mediterranean.

OPS Performance and Environmental Benefits

Over the past year, the OPS system has delivered nearly 3.4 million kWh of renewable energy to container ships moored at the terminal. While most of these ships were ultra-large container vessels with capacities of 24,000 TEUs, the system has also demonstrated adaptability by supplying power to a smaller 5,000 TEU vessel.

Most connections were with MSC ships, though CMA CGM vessels also benefited. With an average connection time of 54 hours, and a record connection of 91 hours the longest in Europe the system has successfully integrated into the port’s daily operations, from mooring to cargo handling.

Pilot Phase and Operational Insights

This first anniversary also marks the halfway point of the two-year pilot phase. Throughout the 30 OPS connections, the port has prioritized safety, efficiency, and continuous process optimization. Real-time data collection has provided valuable insights into grid integration, while coordination among stakeholders has streamlined connection procedures. According to Ana Arévalo, head of the Shorepower Department, the project has laid a strong foundation to expand OPS use and further maximize emissions reductions in the coming year.

Future Plans Under the Nexigen Program

The OPS initiative is part of the broader Nexigen Plan, which aims to electrify the Port of Barcelona’s main docks to improve air quality in the city. Following the pilot projects at BEST and Grimaldi Terminal, OPS systems will be extended to the Sant Bertran ferry terminal. Construction is already underway for the first OPS facility dedicated to cruise ships at the MSC terminal, supported by a new port substation and a medium-voltage network. These steps represent a decisive move toward creating a fully electrified, sustainable port infrastructure.

The Port of Barcelona’s first year of OPS operations demonstrates its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and air quality improvement. With the success of the pilot phase and expansion under the Nexigen Plan, the port is positioning itself as a leader in green maritime infrastructure, paving the way for a cleaner and more resilient future in global shipping.
