- Port of Auckland is introducing a biofouling spot-cleaning prototype to support vessel operations and biosecurity.
- The initiative, developed with NZDS, targets hard-to-clean niche areas on ships.
- The system allows vessels to be cleaned while berthed, reducing delays and safety risks.
- The prototype is expected to be operational by the summer cruise season.
Port of Auckland is preparing to launch a new biofouling spot-cleaning prototype, designed to enhance biosecurity standards and streamline shipping operations within New Zealand waters. The initiative marks a significant step toward providing safer, in-port cleaning options for vessels, as reported by Breakbulk.
Developed in collaboration with New Zealand Diving and Salvage Limited (NZDS), the prototype targets hard-to-reach areas of ships—commonly referred to as niche areas—that are often difficult for regulators and operators to manage. Previously, vessels flagged for biofouling were required to conduct cleaning offshore, sometimes in challenging or unsafe sea conditions. With the new system, ships will be able to berth in Auckland and undergo cleaning without interrupting passenger or freight operations, reducing both delays and safety risks.
While still under development, the project is advancing with input from regulators and industry stakeholders to secure intellectual property protections and biosecurity approvals. Once finalized, the port expects the service to be available during the upcoming summer season, aligning with peak cruise activity and reinforcing its role in safeguarding the marine environment while maintaining operational reliability.
