  • An explosion was reported off Yemen’s coast, with the crew confirmed safe.
  • The incident occurred 120 nautical miles east of Aden, according to UKMTO.
  • Houthi rebels have intensified maritime attacks since the Gaza conflict began in 2023.

A British maritime security agency confirmed that an explosion was heard on Tuesday off the coast of Yemen, an area where regional waters have seen increasing attacks since the Gaza conflict escalated in 2023.

Incident Details

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), operated by Britain’s Royal Navy, said the incident happened around 120 nautical miles (222 kilometers) east of Aden. Reports indicated a “splash and sound of explosion” in the vicinity. Despite the blast, the crew was unharmed and the vessel continued its journey.

Regional Context

While UKMTO described the occurrence as an “attack,” no group immediately claimed responsibility. Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who control large parts of Yemen, have been targeting shipping in the region since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023. Earlier this month, the group said it had fired a missile at a tanker in the Red Sea, days after Israeli airstrikes killed their prime minister and nearly half of his cabinet.
