NYK Pioneers Ship-to-Ship Ammonia Transfer for Next-Gen Fuels

13

A significant milestone in the maritime industry was recently achieved with a ship-to-ship (STS) ammonia transfer off the coast of Ceuta, Spain. This was the first liquefied ammonia transfer for NYK, conducted from the ammonia carrier Berlian Ekuator, owned by NYK and chartered by Mitsui & Co., Ltd., to the ammonia carrier Eco Enchanted, operated by Trammo, Inc.

Key Details of the Transfer

The transfer, which took place on September 2, was executed on the high seas and involved the successful and safe transfer of approximately 23,000 metric tons of liquefied ammonia. NYK, leveraging its experience with STS transfers for other cargoes like crude oil, LNG, and LPG, collaborated with Trammo and its designated STS specialist, International Fender Providers Ltd. The operation adhered to strict safety protocols, proving the feasibility of this method for handling next-generation fuels.

Significance for the Maritime Industry

The successful STS transfer is a significant step in the development of an international supply network for ammonia, which is gaining attention as a next-generation, carbon-free clean energy source. The STS method is considered a flexible alternative to conventional land-based cargo handling because it is not restricted by port size or the availability of onshore equipment.

The success of this operation positions NYK and its partners to build on this experience to strengthen safe maritime transportation systems for next-generation fuels and contribute to the broader goal of a decarbonized society.
