Klaipėda Port Accelerates Green Transition With New Power And Hydrogen Projects

11

Klaipėda State Seaport Authority is taking significant steps towards sustainable maritime operations with major investments in electrification and green hydrogen infrastructure. These initiatives align with the port’s long-term goal of reducing emissions and preparing for future regulatory requirements.

New Power Station for Clean-Fuel Vessels

The newly installed power station, developed by electrification services provider Elektrifikacijos paslaugos, will soon be connected to the grid for trials. With an investment of nearly €601,000 (including VAT), fully funded by the Port Authority, the facility will supply electricity to a hydrogen- and electric-powered waste collection vessel arriving later this year.
According to General Director Algis Latakas, the project reflects the port’s commitment to modern and eco-friendly solutions. By 2030, ships berthed at the port will be required to use shore power instead of running their engines, and this station marks the first step toward meeting that demand.

Broader Electrification and Hydrogen Initiatives

Looking ahead, the port plans to install four onshore power supply stations for RoRo vessels by 2026, with additional facilities for cruise and container ships expected later. The full electrification of port quays is scheduled for completion by 2028, with all electricity sourced from renewable providers such as wind and solar.

In parallel, Klaipėda is also advancing the construction of Lithuania’s first green hydrogen station. Once completed in February 2026, this facility will provide clean hydrogen for vessels, port equipment, and even private transport across the Baltic States.

The Port of Klaipėda is positioning itself as a regional leader in sustainable shipping by embracing electrification and hydrogen technologies. These projects not only enhance the port’s competitiveness but also contribute to broader European climate goals. By 2030, Klaipėda aims to operate as a model green port, setting an example for other maritime hubs worldwide.
