Lloyd’s Register (LR) has joined forces with Deployable Energy, a Houston-based nuclear technology company, to explore the safe integration of micro-nuclear reactor technology into the maritime sector. The collaboration focuses on Deployable Energy’s Unity Nuclear Battery, a factory-built micro-reactor designed to provide safe, zero-emission power and potentially transform ship propulsion systems.
Unity Nuclear Battery: A Zero-Emission Alternative
The Unity Nuclear Battery has been engineered to replace conventional marine fuels with a sustainable, compact solution. Using Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) fuel and industry-proven materials, the modular design enables safer handling, efficient integration, and extended vessel endurance without the need for frequent refuelling. This makes it an attractive option for reducing emissions while enhancing operational efficiency and time at sea.
Aligning with International Safety and Regulatory Standards
Lloyd’s Register has been actively guiding Deployable Energy through the regulatory and safety pathways required for approval of nuclear propulsion on vessels. A recent technical workshop led by LR brought together experts in classification, safety assurance, and advisory services to evaluate critical safety case requirements and licensing milestones. By addressing regulatory and integration challenges early on, the collaboration aims to accelerate commercial deployment and ensure compliance with international safety expectations.
This partnership represents a significant step toward introducing nuclear propulsion as a practical, zero-emission alternative in shipping. With LR’s expertise in safety and classification and Deployable Energy’s innovative micro-reactor technology, the groundwork is being laid for pilot maritime deployments later this decade. If successful, nuclear-powered vessels could become a key enabler in shipping’s decarbonization journey, supporting global sustainability goals while maintaining operational efficiency.
