Qatar Eases Maritime Restrictions Amid Ongoing GPS Disruption

On October 6, 2025, Qatar’s Ministry of Transport partially lifted a nationwide maritime navigation suspension, allowing daytime sailing for non-conventional vessels while maintaining nighttime restrictions, reports gCaptain.

This decision follows a complete suspension of maritime activities on October 4 due to a technical malfunction affecting the country’s GPS systems.

Qatar eases unprecedented maritime restrictions

Despite the partial easing, the GPS issue remains unresolved, with authorities warning that navigation accuracy continues to be compromised. Recreational vessels are now required to return to port before sunset and remain within 12 nautical miles of shore. Commercial vessels, including LNG carriers, appear to have received exemptions, with AIS data showing continued operations near Doha and Ras Laffan.

Reports from users in Doha described location “drifts” toward Iran, fueling speculation about possible electronic interference or GPS spoofing activity in the region. This disruption highlights vulnerabilities in global maritime navigation systems and raises concerns about potential “hybrid disruptions” that blend technical malfunctions, deliberate interference, and geopolitical signaling.

The Ministry emphasized that the partial lifting of restrictions reflects its commitment to the safety of seagoers and their safe return to ports, urging strict compliance with the modified regulations.
