The Port of Rotterdam Authority and the Sea Ranger Service have formalized a three-year collaboration aimed at providing young individuals with opportunities to embark on maritime careers while contributing to the port’s sustainability objectives. This partnership was officially established through a signing ceremony attended by Harbour Master René de Vries and Wietse van der Werf, founder and CEO of the Sea Ranger Service.
Empowering the Next Generation of Maritime Professionals
This initiative offers youth the chance to gain hands-on experience in the maritime sector, fostering their professional growth and understanding of port operations. The Sea Ranger Service, established in 2016, has a track record of training and employing young individuals in coastal areas, with over 200 participants aged 18 to 29, half of whom have transitioned into maritime careers.
Contributing to a Sustainable Port
The collaboration aligns with the Port of Rotterdam’s commitment to sustainability. The first project under this partnership involves documenting plastic litter within the port area, supporting efforts to transition towards a climate-neutral port. The Sea Ranger Service’s dual focus on youth employment and environmental conservation underscores the synergy between workforce development and ecological responsibility.
A Symbolic Milestone
In April, the Sea Ranger Service’s new sailing work vessel, the SRS Janet Taylor, was christened by Her Majesty Queen Máxima at the Kop van Zuid in Rotterdam. This vessel will play a pivotal role in the Sea Rangers’ activities, enabling them to make significant strides in their mission to provide employment and contribute to nature conservation efforts.
