The Port of Lisbon successfully maintained its strong growth trajectory through the first eight months of 2025, confirming its critical function within Portugal’s national logistics network and global maritime trade corridors. Overall, total cargo handled from January to August grew by 3.4% year-on-year, processing 7.73 million tons compared to 7.47 million tons in the equivalent period of 2024. This consistent positive performance reflects the operational robustness and adaptability of the port infrastructure.
Segment-Specific Growth (January–August)
The positive year-to-date results were driven by growth across nearly all key cargo segments. The General Cargo segment was a major contributor, reaching 3.69 million tons with a notable 5.9% increase compared to the previous year. Within this, the specialized Breakbulk Cargo segment saw particularly strong activity, registering a significant 30.66% increase and totaling 218.8 thousand tons. Furthermore, container movement demonstrated solid expansion, recording 321,656 TEU (twenty-foot container equivalent units) for a 5.35% gain year-on-year. Solid Bulk also proved fundamental to the overall performance, with 3.11 million tons handled and a 3.8% increase, emphasizing the port’s capacity to meet diverse market demands.
August 2025 Performance and Operational Stability
August 2025 stood out as a highly favorable month for port activity, with total cargo handled reaching 1.08 million tons, marking a significant 12.49% increase over August 2024. This monthly surge was primarily propelled by the extraordinary performance of the Solid Bulk segment, which skyrocketed by 79.53%, growing from 276.9 thousand tons in August 2024 to 497.2 thousand tons in the same month of 2025.
While General Cargo saw a month-specific decrease of 12.44%, totaling 474 thousand tons, the massive bulk movement ensured the overall positive result. Looking at operational stability, the number of Cargo Ship calls remained constant year-to-date, with 1,254 calls recorded, demonstrating the consistent regularity of operations and continued operator confidence in the infrastructure managed by the Lisbon Port Authority (APL).
