Port Of Philadelphia Named North America’s Most Productive Port For The Second Year In A Row

8

The Port of Philadelphia has once again made history by being recognized as the most productive port in North America, according to the 2024 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) released by the World Bank Group and S&P Global Market Intelligence. This achievement highlights Philadelphia’s growing prominence in global trade, as the port climbed from 55th to 26th position worldwide — making it the only U.S. port ranked among the top 50 globally.

Rising Global Recognition and Operational Excellence

Philadelphia’s consistent performance reflects its operational efficiency and teamwork. The CPPI evaluates vessel turnaround time, crane operations, and schedule management across 403 container ports. Philadelphia outshined major U.S. ports such as New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Long Beach.

According to Jeff Theobald, Executive Director & CEO of PhilaPort, this recognition is the result of hard work by labor, management, and logistics partners. The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) workers have been commended for their dedication and professionalism, ensuring smooth and timely cargo handling operations.

Strategic Investments and Future Expansion Plans

PhilaPort’s success is also rooted in its strategic investments over $1 billion in modernization during the past decade. These investments have improved the port’s infrastructure, making it more efficient for ocean carriers and shippers while boosting local economic growth.

Recently, PhilaPort expanded its footprint by acquiring the 152-acre Mustin Yard property from Norfolk Southern Corporation. This addition will enhance cargo capacity, support intermodal operations, and create new job opportunities. The port’s leaders view this expansion as part of a broader vision to strengthen Philadelphia’s role as a global trade hub ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026.

Philadelphia’s rise as North America’s most productive port is a result of collaboration, innovation, and long-term planning. Its achievements not only benefit the regional economy but also position the city as a leader in global maritime trade. With continued investment and teamwork, the Port of Philadelphia is set to maintain its momentum and remain a model of efficiency for ports worldwide.
