Germany has become the first nation to join Canada’s initiative aimed at creating international green shipping corridors, marking a major step toward sustainable maritime transport. The agreement, signed by State Secretary Dr. Claudia Elif Stutz during a high-level meeting in Ottawa, reinforces both countries’ shared commitment to decarbonizing global shipping, as announced by the Federal Ministry of Transport.

Global Cooperation for Climate-Friendly Shipping

Through the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding, Germany and Canada—along with other future signatories—plan to establish green shipping corridors connecting Eastern Canadian ports like Halifax and Montreal with major hubs in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. These routes will serve as pathways for adopting climate-neutral technologies and promoting voluntary collaboration across the maritime value chain. Germany also intends to integrate this initiative with its forthcoming National Action Plan for Climate-Friendly Shipping, supported by continued funding under the “Climate-Friendly Shipping and Ports” program within the Climate and Transformation Fund.
