DNV Launches The First Public Tender Portal For E-Methanol Procurement In Europe And The UK

18

DNV has taken a major step toward accelerating Europe’s green energy transition by launching the industry’s first public tender portal for e-methanol procurement in the European Union and the United Kingdom.

This initiative bridges the gap between e-methanol producers and industrial offtakers, offering a transparent and reliable platform for securing long-term supplies of low-carbon fuel. The move aims to support the decarbonization of high-emission sectors such as shipping, heavy industry, and aviation.

E-Methanol: A Key Solution for Decarbonization

E-methanol, produced from renewable hydrogen and captured biogenic carbon, is gaining attention as one of the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels. It helps industries comply with European regulatory frameworks like RED III, Fit for 55, EU ETS, ReFuelEU Aviation, and FuelEU Maritime.

Countries including Germany, Spain, France, and Belgium are already introducing blending mandates that exceed EU targets, highlighting e-methanol’s growing importance. However, challenges such as limited biofuel feedstock and rising costs have made sourcing renewable fuels difficult. DNV’s initiative helps overcome these barriers by connecting producers with verified buyers through a transparent and structured process.

DNV’s Two-Phase Tender Process

To ensure reliability and transparency, DNV has developed a two-stage tender process:

  1. Qualification Phase: Identifies a shortlist of serious and eligible potential offtakers.

  2. Negotiation Phase: Enables direct discussions between shortlisted participants and the e-methanol producer.

This process provides confidence to both producers and buyers, helping establish e-methanol as a bankable and scalable commodity. The fuel will be fully compliant with European RFNBO certification standards and is expected to be available for delivery by the second half of 2028.

As stated by Santiago Blanco, Vice-President and Regional Director at DNV, the tender is not just about technology it’s about creating the mechanisms that allow the market to grow and make clean fuels more accessible and dependable.

DNV’s launch of the e-methanol tender portal marks a turning point in Europe’s renewable energy landscape. By fostering transparent procurement and building trust between producers and consumers, the initiative strengthens the continent’s path toward a net-zero future. This strategic move aligns with Europe’s ambitious climate goals and ensures that industries can access sustainable, regulation-compliant fuels to power the next phase of the green transition.
