Alphaliner’s prediction from Q1 is now coming to fruition as we approach the end of 2025. Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS) are officially taking the lead over Neo-Sub-Panamax vessels in terms of global market share, reports LinkedIn.

Fleet Growth and Capacity Expansion

Our latest forecasts indicate that ULCS vessels, each boasting a capacity of over 15,000 TEU, will collectively surpass 8.3 Mteu by the end of 2025. So far this year, we’ve seen nearly 0.9 Mteu of capacity added to this fleet segment, with another 0.2 Mteu expected to be delivered before December wraps up.

Current Fleet Overview

The ULCS fleet currently consists of 432 vessels, combining for a capacity exceeding 8 Mteu. In contrast, Neo-Sub-Panamax vessels, ranging from 5,100 to 10,000 TEU, account for just under 8.1 Mteu across nearly 1,100 ships.

Slower Growth Among Neo-Sub-Panamax Ships

Even with their large numbers, the Neo-Sub-Panamax segment has only grown by less than 0.3 Mteu in 2025, underscoring the market’s ongoing shift toward larger, more efficient ULCS units.
