Building on their earlier collaboration, Peninsula and the University of Gibraltar have taken a major step forward in maritime education through the launch of the Peninsula Maritime Simulation Suite. This advanced training facility, funded by Peninsula, aims to transform cadet education and professional development in Gibraltar. Beyond meeting the mandatory UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) requirements, this initiative strengthens Gibraltar’s position as a global hub for maritime excellence and innovation.
Advancing Maritime Education Through Innovation
The Peninsula Maritime Simulation Suite supports the University of Gibraltar’s vision of becoming a world-class centre for maritime training. The facility will play a key role in delivering the BSc (Hons) Maritime Science and Cadetship programme, enabling cadets to meet simulation training standards required by the MCA. This training will allow them to progress toward their Certificate of Competence as Officers of the Watch.
Peninsula’s Founder and CEO, John A. Bassadone, highlighted that the initiative ensures seafarers receive world-class training locally, reinforcing Gibraltar’s growing reputation for maritime excellence. Similarly, Aaron Lopez, Head of the University’s Maritime Academy, described the suite as a “game-changer” that provides cost-effective, industry-aligned training and helps attract international talent.
A Technological Leap in Maritime Training
Equipped with technology from Wärtsilä, a global leader in maritime simulation, the suite will feature a Part Task Navigational Bridge Simulator that complies with updated MCA sea-time equivalency requirements. This system supports multiple languages English, Spanish, and French and includes specialised modules such as LNG bunkering and complex operational scenarios for Peninsula’s officers and crew.
The facility will not only enhance the skills of local cadets but also give the University of Gibraltar a competitive edge in attracting international students and fostering industry-ready maritime professionals. It exemplifies how innovation, education, and industry partnership can shape the future of seafaring excellence.
The creation of the Peninsula Maritime Simulation Suite marks a defining moment for Gibraltar’s maritime education sector. By combining Peninsula’s strategic investment with the University of Gibraltar’s academic vision, this collaboration strengthens the island’s standing as a centre for maritime learning and research. It represents a shared commitment to advancing education, developing skilled professionals, and driving Gibraltar’s maritime industry toward a future defined by innovation and global excellence.
